West Ghent is not only a good place to live, it's a great place to live! With the "artsy" feel of Ghent within walking distance, both families with children and families with no children can enjoy casual dining as well as upscale dining, The Chrysler Museum, The Harrison Opera House, the many events held at Towne Point Park (once the refacing has been completed) as well as being within 2 miles or less of the "Dowtown Norfolk" activities. The homes have the wonderful charm and character of homes built in the early 1900's as well as cooperatives, condos, and newer townhomes. It's an eclectic mix of properties and personalities. Ask any Gentite and they will tell you it's the only place to live.

I love Ghent! I'm a single female physician who feels perfectly comfortable walking in Ghent alone and I live in one of those condos. There are plenty of families in both sections of Ghent and the schools are very good. If you really need the yard, picket fence and Stepford wives, go to suburbia. If you want good restaurants, cool bars, an artsy movie house, professional offices and a hospital all within walking distance, come to Ghent.

Hi Joules! I've worked out of the Norfolk office of Long and Foster in the heart of Ghent for over 10 years now. It's a great place with a flair all its own.
Ghent and West Ghent seem to have particular appeal to urban professionals and the availability of fun things to do and great places to eat remain strong incentives. There are also a lot of housing options that don't require a lot of outdoor upkeep, so if you don't need a swing set and a place to play ball than you may find more options that work for you.
Our multiple listing service (the big database that real estate professionals pay to subscribe to) can sort homes for sale by neighborhood, so if you'd like to see everything that's available for sale (or rent) in West Ghent, send me an email. I can set up the search to run automatically, and if you see something that appeals to you, you can call me to set up a showing. No muss, no fuss.
Also, please feel free to stop into our friendly Long and Foster office at the corner of 21st and Colonial. We have a duty agent from 9 until 6 and lots of agents familiar with this eclectic section of town.

No denying Ghent & West Ghent have much charm. However, in the neighborhood where I grew up in Virginia Beach we didn’t have random people passing through our neighborhood, with absolutely no purpose, scoping things out. Like any place in Norfolk you will have random people strolling down the street who probably do not live in the neighborhood, but you have to wonder what was his or her purpose to begin with. You never know when this is going to be a problem, but why put yourself or your loved ones at risk.

I was IN Harris Teeter the other day and some random guy tried to pick my pocket. I was running errands yesterday and saw the same guy walking by Suntrust bank with no business or purpose, just a random guy saying “what’s up” to people as he passed them. The same way he tried to distract me in the grocery store, fortunately, my wallet was not going anywhere. Before the economy soured most of these “trendy” places had security at the door. Now you need them more than ever because I would image some people are desperate.

Along Redgate in West Ghent, down Olney Road, Princess Anne Road, and all of the branches from these main roads there’s much of this "random traffic." More concerning there's a great little park many residents take their kids off of Redgate. Sandwiched between the houses are condos and apartments, which have a range of people barely scraping by to college kids & medical students to professionals. I feel downtown is a better choice for a single professional, so if you're not married that might be a better choice. If you feel you'll eventually marry or have kids and want a yard, then West Ghent may not be for you. Good Luck!

Ghent is a fantabulous area to live in. There are swanky shops and eateries along with arts areas and fine dining. You are close enough to Waterside that you can enjoy the eateries there and you can participate in a bunch of different festivals. The Farm Fresh Market is a great grocery store with a boutiquey kind of feel. They can prepare meals for you that you can pick up on your way to work, and if you are having a get together, they also cater. Then there is Harris Teeter which is also great. There's a wine shop and many ethnic restaurants are represented in Ghent. There are several major banks within walking distance of anything and you are still very close to MacArthur Center for shopping. I don't have kids either but I bought in the suburbs; however, Ghent is an excellent choice for a professional couple. Our office is there and it is a joy to come to work everyday, have Starbucks withiin walking distance and A. W. Shucks restaurant available for lunch. I think you can comfortably live in Ghent and not want for anything! Call me if you'd like me to help you look for a home there (757) 237-0494.

ABSOLUTELY! It's a very popular location - I have relocated many professionals in various industries to West Ghent, and if you work on the southside of Hampton Roads, it's a great option.

Good Morning,

West Ghent is a very desireable area for many professionals because of all of the things mentioned in the two previous answers......just so much to offer! People there just seem to love their community.

My office is located in Ghent at 2000 Colonial Ave. #13 If you would like to get together and talk a bit and let me show you on the MLS what all is available, I would be happy to do so. Just give me a call and we will make it convenient to your schedule. And, if you have seen properties that are of interest to you, send me the address by email and I will forward the information on to you.
Hope to talk with you soon.........

West Ghent is a great place to live. You can walk to a bunch of great restaurants and places to sit outdoors. In fact, I had dinner at Kelly's this past Friday night outdoors in West Ghent. And the architecture of the homes and condos is hard to find elsewhere in Hampton Roads. As said below, very "eclectic, unique and quaint." If you're looking for crime reports, you can find them on norfolk.gov and walkscore.com is a great way to see what places you can walk to from what your buying/interested in. Let me know if you need any more help or would like to go look at some properties in that area... I'd be happy to help.
