When we bought our first home we had just gotten our real estate licenses about 6 months prior. So we represented ourselves. Now it is funny to think about it, but it was one of our first transactions.

Personally, now that I have been in the business for quite a while, I love it when people interview other agents and make their choice. I like working with consumers who are prepared and making an informed decision.

I personally found my realtor, Nannette Vides, by working with her as a mortgage broker. In this industry I've worked with many, many realtors so I've seen the best and I've seen the worst. I'm not saying that the other realtors I've worked with are not satisfactory but the realtor I work with now goes above and beyond with every client--always getting closing costs negotiated, always there are signings, always there to talk to on the phone. She is basically always available and always kind, warm, and helpful.

The first time we bought a condo though I hadn't met Nannette yet, so we informally interviewed about four realtors. By informally I mean meeting them through open houses, etc., and just asking questions on the spot, finding out how much they know about the market, finding out how compatible we were as people. We ended up working with someone from ZipRealty and let me just say that our experience was horrific beyond words. The 20% commission back from the realtor is not worth all the hassle and trouble we had to go through working with her. Luckily we've been able to find a much better, more suitable realtor for us since.

Ask friends and family. I'd start with 3 and see if you hit it off with one. If not maybe keep interviewing until you find the right one.
