I think what you are referring to is the fact that if you have a self-directed IRA (individual retirement account) you can place up to 50% of the contributions into real estate and still get the tax deferrals and compounding benefits. It's not too common, but for real estate investors is a tool that they use. If you are interested in learning about it I recommend contacting a financial planner.
