Does the air smell like grain in St. Paul?

Asked by Maureen McCabe, Columbus, OH Wed May 23, 2007

I remember being in Minneapolis and feeling like the air was filled with flour and oats and other grains. Or smelled like grain anyway. Did I just imagine it? I would imagine you would get used to it...if you lived there, and there certainly are worse things for a city to smell like.there "mills" in the Twin Cities? Is General Mills based in Minneapolis? I don't know if I was ever in St. Paul.

Interesting question. The air in St. Paul smelled like corn for a time when we had the first and only urban ethanol plant. Yes General Mills is located here and is a great place to work. The mill district in Minneapolis was the grain milling capital of the world until about the 1950's. now the area along the river has housing. Condos, lofts, shops it is a great place to live.
