What kinds of cultural and recreational activites are available to families with small children in Manhattan?

Manhattan has become very family friendly. According to the US census there has been a baby boom in Manhattan since 2000. 1 in every 20 Manhattanites is a toddler between age 1 and 5. Families with children enjoy the Children's Museum, The Hayden Planetarium, The Museum of Natural History and numerous playgrounds and parks for recreational activities.

Manhattan is very family friendly. I just got an email update on Manhattan summer day camps for children 3-7. Their programs would make suburban parents envious as most are associated with the local museums. There are Gymboree classes, Mommy and Me classes... even support groups. lol Not to mention street fairs, YMCA, boardwalks, Central Park, other little parks, and sports classes...
