We sold our home to a relo co, our name is on the county website as the owner & relo co as taxpayer. Typical?

We were not told this would be the case. Money has exchanged hands and we are concerned that our name is still associated with the home and what about liabilities, etc. ? The county website has been updated 2 weeks ago and our home was sold to them 2 months ago. Also, the county only registers the home as being sold once and that was to us not when we sold it to the relo.

Part of your closing documents include the deed. Look at the paperwork you signed. Then call the relo company and ask them your questions. As knowledgeable as we may be, we don't know what the details are in your case.

In most cases the RELO company is going to take responsibility for the property's maintenance, care, taxes, etc. and manage it until it can be sold. The RELO company should be able to answer your questions to your satisfaction.

This is completely normal and should be no cause for concern. I don't mean to dismiss your concerns as invalid but rather to convey that this is so normal that I wouldn't even give it a second thought. As the others have explained counties takes months to record their records and push that information through to the public websites.

Michael is right, the recording of all the documents can take time and so it could be a matter of a delay in the recording. It doesn't hurt to contact the title company but delays like this are common.

Michael is correct title company reports all closing transfer of title from one owner too another. UNLESS your sales purchase from relo has other "side agreements" that you may not be aware of. GREAT QUESTION, I would follow up ASAP correct info. where no liability to you.

Jen,

Call the title company that handled the closing and tell them about your concern. You should have been giving a deed transferring the home to the relo company at closing. That ends your interest and any liability in the property. Counties records can run up to six months behind so they might just not be fully updated yet.

I agree with Dp2 that with your new information that this doesn't sound like a good position. You should speak to your transferring company and the RELO company for further clarification and I encourage you to have an attorney look at it as well... since none of us have seen your paperwork or are privy to your situation we can't offer much counsel and in no circumstance can we offer legal advice.

I don't mean to scare you, but you're really not in a safe position here.

You need to contact an attorney immediately to help you to look over the terms your purchase agreement. You should not have transferred your title without some form of representation (a realtor, attorney, and/or title agent), because you might still be liable for anything that happens with the property.

I don't know that this sale could even be considered finalized since the contract didn't have a closing date on it. Again, this is why you'll need to consult with an attorney ASAP.

Thank you so much for your input. Hearing from impartial professionals was priceless. Due to the situation, we really had no clue because the relo co. sent paperwork through the mail, we signed with a notary that we found and hoped for the best. We asked questions over and over like why the selling date could not be on the contract and deed and she just insisted it not be there, that they type it in later, etc. So there was no title company, real estate agent, or any other rep for us at that point.

Based on your recommendations, I knew what to look for in papers, began calling the county recorder to double check if any thing had been filed, etc. and went from there. Next I called Corporate Relocation Services out of Green Bay, WI & it is verified that in the paperwork it does not state the deed would be left open, but it is their intent to leave it in our name until it sells. There is a possibility we could have it changed.

What would you recommend? Are there potential issues with the property in our name?
