You will find many wonderful suggestions and referrals in your answers. I have been in the business for over 30 years and have worked with Kevin Smith from Wells Fargo (Kevin.Smith@wellsfargo.com, 206-389-1100) for over 15 years and he is by far the most professional person I have worked with. There are no surprises when you work with Kevin and Wells Fargo is an extremely stable bank in these uncertain times.
This is a good Q. The process is a lot easier than you may think. Of course, these days qualifying for the loan is harder than in the past. When I am in the market for something like a mortgage I ask for recommendations? I am not a mortgage expert but I know somebody who is. I have been very happy with the service provided by this guy and my clients have also been very happy with him. He came highly recommended from another real estate agent who has been in the business for 30+ years.
I suggest you give Troy Westendorf a call or shoot him an email. If you are just curious about the process he will educate you with no pressure

Basically, you take a simple application and then have your application and credit reviewed through an automated system. Depending on the strength of your credit, the amount of your down payment, and your income you will receive your approval or denial.
I promise you it is not as hard as it seems but it can be an art, not a science.
Don't hesitate to call.
