Why is it that many agents do not answer the phone?

I called 3 agents in Charlottesville and never got an answer. I am a little lost for words...

You are not alone in asking that question. As I realtor, I often cannot get in touch with fellow realtors. Speaking for myself, my primary contact phone is my cell. I find it the most efficient method for getting and retrieving phone calls. Occasionally, people leave messages on my office phone. Admittedly, I am lax at retrieving those messages as it is used primarily interoffice. You should not have to hunt down a realtor. Those realtors who take their careers seriously will be one, at most, 2 phone calls away. Use the lack of return phone call as an indication of what future service may be.

The good news is the full time professional Realtors either answer their phone or return your call within 1 or 2 hours. Nearly of 1/3 of the people who call me per week comment that I was the first Santa Fe realtor that answered my phone. It is all about how each agent or broker handles their business since every Realtor is a self-employed independent contractor. In today's different real estate market, not all Realtors are full-time. Perhaps that is one reason for your no answer or no return call. What is important is to keep calling until someone does and then interview them to see if they are the right buyer broker for your real estate needs. Many agents did not answer the phone because they are part time agents who have another job, and cannot answer the phone when they are at that job. I answer my phone from 7am to 11pm because that's when people have questions. I am a Full time Real Estate Associate Broker. Find your self a full time Real Estate Professional who gives the profession there undivided attention during their working hours.

I am a Realtor. I was in Port St. Lucie Florida looking to purchase some land and called on 6 different signs. It is 6 years later and I am still waiting for a call back.

My website gives out my direct number that rings first in my home office and then transfers to my cell phone if I am not at home. Everyone runs their individual businesses in their own way. We are each accountable for our own actions...that's more than enough for me!

Being a realtor is all about creating and following a system. Most, like 90%, have no clue what a system is but that 10% have mastered it and take advantage of it and are the ones who make the most money.

Its like any business, if you don't return calls, you will fail and go out of business. Remember most realtors are P/T and I have learned not to deal with them too often unless I have to. I want someone who lives, breaths and eats real estate, not the person who pretends to be one because they took a 5 days course. When a realtor doesn't return my call in 48 business day hours, I nix them from my list of people to deal with. There is no reason for them not to, and if they can't return my call, I expect the reason to be on their voice mail message so I don't think their blowing me off. I lost a good investment property the other day because the realtor whom I called 3 days earlier never returned my call. Its now day 7 and still no call.

Every business, job, career is about follow up. Most love the title of being a realtor but most are no where near being one. They haven't the foggiest clue what one should be and even if they did they couldn't be one anyways.

I'm not sure if you are talking about agents in NYC but I've had a problem myself as a consumer, an agent and a broker with this in both NY and Arizona.. Many brokerages do not have a forwarding system in place and if you should call looking for immediate assistance after 9-5 or on weekends, you can't get any help..Many agents don't even return calls days later, even to other agents! I understand that for security reasons even during business hours, one might not want to answer a call from an unknown person, as if you advertise in any way your phone number is out there... and that's where caller id is helpful. I myself make a point of answering my phone or returning calls asap, if I am in the middle of a meeting or after business hours. What really irks me, is when you can't reach an agent at all from Friday till Tuesday, as that's when many buyers are interested in learning about or viewing a property A large brokerage should be able to have a system in place, where a phone inquiry is always answered by a person (preferably an agent or broker on call) and answers provided as soon as possible.

We are sorry about this unfortunate turn of events.... Please be assured, this is not the norm. From our stand point, when agents are busy and can not take the call they will return your call as soon as they become free.

Keep trying and trust the wait might be worth it. Things happen for a reason.......

I am going to play "Point-Counter Point".I am no way being defensive but I want to give a different view from what some of my associates have said.The first thing is to ask you if you left a clear message with your phone number for the agent to call you back.If you did and then did not get a call back it is Shame-Shame on that agent.
I have had many occassion when I chose to let a call go into my voice mail,such as
When I am showing a home (the customer/client gets my full attention)
When I am taking or reviewing a listing with a client(they get my full attention)
When I am driving(even with my hands free) I answer maybe half my calls,many connections are poor and callers can't be heard or can't here you ,Many times lookers ask questions you can't answer as your driving
I wonder just how safe it is to be on the cell phone when your driving even with your hands free set up?
I have my numbers from my office and my family show up with the name on my cell phone just in case there is an emergency or a critical question to be answered.
Okay call me a lousy agent,I just feel a call back in a few minutes is just fine.

GREAT QUESTION: however if agents are much like our professional team here in Dallas we are extremely busy, however our policy return calls within 2 hours of receipt. We are on conference calls, showing properties, working on contracts terms and conditions.... those clients are wanting our immediate attention for they have scheduled and appointed times. It would be unjust for us cancel an appointment.

Most dont see real estate as a profession, no difference between realtors and attorneys, doctors, CPA's, name a few. As with many we rather speak with clients were we can focus on your request have a professional conversation.

unforatantely there is a trend with the larger agencies to go to automated phones and showing desks located out of state. i am glad they are too busy to answer their phones because when i do, and show people there are still old fashioned thoughts of answering your own phone, showing your own listings and offering the best service possible. There are alot of great people left, unfortanately you have to talk to a couple of answering machines to find them.
