Home Buying in Round Rock>Question Details

Bob, Home Buyer in College Station, TX

I may be moving my family to the area in a month to take a new position at UT Austin.

Asked by Bob, College Station, TX Thu Aug 14, 2008

We have two boys with autism and would like to find a school district with good autism services. What are the best schools in the Round Rock or Georgetown area for autism programs? Our price range is around $250K.

Dear Bob,
I have to agree with Jeffry, UT campus is quite the drive from Round Rock and even further from Georgetown. Plus your route is the freeway with the most heavy traffic in Austin. It may not look very far on the map, but at rush hour (6:30-9:30 and 3-7pm) the drive is a killer! There are very nice homes withing Austin for $250K. If you have not moved yet, drop me a note and Ican set you up with a free auto search for homes that meet your needs.
Sincerely,
Betina

Hi Bob:

I have a grandson with autism so I'm familiar with your concerns. I've enclosed a link for the US Autism and Asperger's Association conference that will be held at the Austin Hilton September 4-7, 2008. My step-daughter is planning to attend. Before you make your move, a visit to each school district might be essential in you decision-making process. You have to be your children's advocate when it comes to their education and IEP. I would love to help you find the correct fit for your family.

Bob,

First, if you're working for UT Austin and having to travel downtown, then you might reconsider Round Rock and especially Georgetown. They are a long way from Austin, with really long commute issues.

Actually, some of the best sources for autism programs will be UT funded, or somehow associated with UT programs. You should inquire with your UT contacts about those programs, as I have heard they are some of the best around. The one at UT is called UTAP, and the web reference has the link to the website. They will also have the best, unbiased opinion of the Austin public school programs.

Sadly, regardless of the sales pitches you might get from others, the public school based systems for autistic children, miss the mark.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Jeffrey

Congratulations on your new job. I've been in the Austin area for many years and I truely love it. I actually live in a suburb of Austin. I'd be happy to get you in touch with the individuals at both school districts that handle the Special Education corriculam so that you are able to talk to them and evaluate each one carefully. You can contact me by email at starletsattler@sbcglobal.net. I hope to hear from you soon.
