Hey Laura,
Assuming you are attending or working at UOP, Elk Grove would be a bit of a drive. If you are attending school there are several nice area right around the school itself. I have have several friends that have gone to school there and some still live in stockton.
Give us some more info and we could help more.

Good luck,
James

Elk Grove is 30 miles north of University of the Pacific, Stockton. It is 11 miles south of the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. So of course it is close to neither. However, there are some excellent neighborhoods in Elk Grove, some good schools, lots of shopping, parks and a all around great quality of life. Every large city has unsafe neighborhoods, and safety is a matter of degree, and a matter of perception. You may think of your level of calmness or fear about a particular place as a point on a continuum or a spectrum.

A person could spend their entire life in Baghdad, feel unsafe, yet never come to harm,
Yet another person might feel totally safe leaving their child in a
a day care center in a Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. The last place any of us ever thought would be a target before it became one. Your concern for safety is understandable. No one can give you an absolute guarantee on that issue.

On my personal spectrum, I think of Elk Grove as a pretty safe city, even though they have auto accidents, bicycle thefts, convenience store hold-ups and bathtub slips just as any medium sized city of 100,000 people in a Metro area is sure to have.

Sue Archer exaggerates the urban sprawl of the area between Elk Grove and Stockton . It is actually mostly rural between Elk Grove and North Stockton. There are couple of towns in between: Lodi and Galt, these are much smaller than Elk Grove, it is mostly ranch land, orchards, dry grass, and river delta

I'm not sure how it is in Oklahoma City, but here, towns run from one into the other. Why don't you just search for home within a certain distance of the campus address? Depending on what you're looking for you can review homes that meet your criteria, considering safety as one of your factors in your final decision.

One more thing. I am assuming you were not talking about the University of Pacific campus in Stockton as Stockton is quite a distance from Elk Grove. I don't know of a good reason why you'd want to live in Elk Grove and go to school in Stockton.

Hello Laura. Unfortunately, real estate agents can't tell you whether an area is safe or not (I know this may sound ridiculous to consumers as one would think that a buyer hires an agent for their knowledge of the area). I always recommend that you check with the local sheriff's department to get crime statistics for Elk Grove and the area around Pacific/McGeorge. You may want to research Oak Park in South Sacramento. Here are a few websites that you may find helpful in doing your research

Elk Grove is not far from the university if you have a car. I am not sure how good public transportation is to the campus.

I hope you'll find this information helpful. Good luck to you.

If those two choices were left to me, I wouldn't chose either of them. But that's my personal opinion. You'll hear glowing reviews from agents who live and work in both.
