If we get our credit checked more than once while applying for a home loan, does that hurt our credit?

Asked by Jim H, San Francisco, CA Mon Jul 21, 2008

I've heard different things. Some people have told me that if we're looking for a home loan and comparing 2-3 lenders, to have them all check our credit in the same 1 or 2 week period to not affect our credit. How does this work?

If the inquiries are all within 30 days, there should be no affect to your score. See this web page and scroll to "rate shopping". However, I advise that you get a copy of your credit report, and find out what your scores are yourself, then send that information to the lender and ask they not pull your credit - that way, if there are 35 days between inquiries it won't hurt you.
