Adding to Mr.Holts advice think of the effect it has on the propertys value and the possible negative effects you may encounter if and when you decide to sell.

I would always exercise caution when purchasing a home near railroad tracks. Because many commercial tracks intersect roads, the vast majority of trains run AT NIGHT. This means that while you may not hear anything trouble during visits, it could be a nonstop noise-fest outside your window... when you least want it to be.

I live on Thomas Jefferson and when I first moved in, I did notice them. For me, it only took not sleeping with the windows open. They do pass by about every 3-4 hours, and it's very rare that they can wake me up. The train itself is not the issue, it's the warning horn that they are required to sound when approaching the crossing. Some conductors lay it on, others are more courteous.
