Manhattan Beach is comprised of 4 primary sections, each with unique and appealing neighborhood amenities. The Tree Section has very strong family appeal, with quiet streets and a park-like setting. It's composed mostly of single family homes, with full lots starting at 40 ft X 112 ft. The tree section is located just east of the Sand Section, which has higher density living (with more apartments and townhomes). bottom line is so cal beach swimming is good from May-Sept. with some very nice days in the other months that you can choose at your own discretion, but you probably won't be swimming in the ocean. the navy seals train at Coronado bay near San Diego and they freeze there a$$ off and many of them suffer from hypothermia from being in the water too long during the winter months and even fall. granted they're in the ocean a lot longer than you will be, but the point is 55 degree water is not tourist or leisure-time swimming water. it's for navy seals and surfers with wet suits. stick to the summer.... more
While you can't beat the beach for having fun.. Manhattan Beach has two large Parks. Live Oak is the place for softball and tennis. There is also a place for little kids to play and a dog run for pups to meet new friends. Polliwog park has a lovely lake and a playground with lots of things to do for the under 5 crowd. Polliwog also has one of the original homes built in Manhattan Beach when the entire city was mostly giant sand dunes..... and speaking of sand dunes.. Sand Dune Park off Bell Ave has one of the last remaining sand dunes in the city. If you are looking for a great workout try climbing the dune a few times.... more
