FHA typically wants to see a 620 credit score. Some lenders go to 580. I would recommend on getting your hands on a copy of your credit report to see what your score is and what is actually reporting. Then start working to increase your score (paying down balances, paying off collections, etc.).
You can get your credit score for free from Credit Karma. I tried it and wrote about it on my blog: http://homebuyernation.com/2013/09/30/how-to-get-your-credit-score-for-free/.
I would then recommend you sitting down with an experienced loan officer in your town. Maybe first try your local bank. Or better, get a recommendation from a friend who has recently gotten a loan and had a good experience.
Sounds like you're at the beginning of the process. Just start reading a bunch of material and start educating yourself on the entire process of buying a house. It is a little overwhelming at first, but try to find unbiased information and you'll be okay. Good luck!... more
