How do I change the "Public Record" portion of a listing if it reporting incorrectly? or... who can I contact to have it changed?

Contact the government agency that's managing the public record. That's usually your local tax assessor's office. You can probably find not only the contact information online, but also your tax record...which likely contains the inaccurate information.

However, if you do that keep in mind that it could possibly result in higher real estate taxes. Let's say the tax records show your house as a 3 bedroom/1.5 bath home. But it's actually a 4 bedroom/2 bath home. That means your house is probably worth more than the tax assessor's office currently thinks it is. Therefore, your assessment might go up and, consequently, your taxes.

If the property is an active MLS listing, whatever the listing agent enters into the public record fields for the listing should be reflected in Trulia within a fairly short time through the process of syndication. If MLS info is not being properly syndicated, the brokerage firm administrator needs to select the correct settings. If the public record info is reporting incorrectly, then that source needs to be advised so it can be changed. In Mecklenburg County, public record data would usually come from the register of deeds, the County Tax Assessor, the County GIS administrator or some combination of the three. Home facts and prior sales include information compiled from public records at local assessor, tax, and recorder offices. Hi Robert,
I suggest contacting Trulia about correcting the public record of your listing. It used to be that if you provided them the correct public record then Trulia would update it but I'm not certain if that is still the way they operate.
Call them at: 888-466-3501 M-F from 7:00am-4:00pm PST. They should be able to help.
