Crappy Answers on Trulia?

Sometimes I feel like I'm watching Saturday Night Live's Mr. Obvious Skit when reading some Trulia answers. Someone asks..."So, tell me about the quality of life in Bojayjay, IL" and one of us answers "Have you thought about asking a local REALTOR in Bojayjay?" Uh....really? Isn't that what they are try to do, but Mr./Ms. Obvious 500 miles away has to insert their comment to get their Trulia points. It seems like the quality answers can get lost in the litany of crappy ones by agents who are more concerned about number of answers vs. quality of the answers. What is your opinion? Should we also list the number of non-useful answers with agents on the stats page? Should we offer Trulia etiquette on-line meet-ups for the most involved?

hey elvis - we are always listening!

We have considered several different scoring systems. The one mentioned below (TUBA) is one of the best in my opinion. However, we find, that if people want to game the system no matter what the system is, they can... and there will always be people unhappy with the scoring method we are using.

So, instead we are focusing on adding functionality that does add value to consumers and agents. We are moderating and we believe strongly in self policing. If someone is not behaving well, they might hurt the trulia community to a certain extent, but mainly they hurt themselves. Agents who have been providing valuable advice on trulia voices, have been contacted by consumers, built relationships with other agents and potentially learned something new along the way....people who do not, did not get all that and ultimately leave the community.

This being said, we are planning some updates on the scoring system that will be rolled out in the next few weeks.

thank you all for your feedback - any other suggestions are more than welcomed (as always!)

vicky (from trulia)

I went back and found Jim's original suggestion for the TUBA scoring system... the link is provided below. I had to wade through many, many of Jim's answers... (dang, Jim... you've given a lot of good advice!!... alot!!)...

it's an excellent suggestion... and Sylvia DID suggest the weighting of BA's, too.

Trulia, are you listening?

Jim...

According to your method, I should have a score of
1425 TU's + 49 BA's divided by 639 total answers = 2.306

But I don't know how to rank that... what would be considered a GOOD score? And it appears you're giving the same ranking to a TU, as you are to a BA... shouldn't a BA be heavier weighted?? Such as 1425TU + (49x2) divided by 639 which would equal 2.38.

by the way.. I think Bojayjay is a wonderful town to live in... those homes just sell themselves.

In 2007 I created the TUBA scoring system: This simply took the total number of best answers plus the number of thumbs up That number was then divided by the number of answers a poster generated., This allowed me to statistically compare the posters who gave good answers consistently to the posters who simply spammed or wrote obvious and uninteresting posts.

For example Brian's Tuba Score is: 0.56 160 ( 149 thumbs up plus 11 best answers) divided by 287 (total answers)

Great Question Brian!!!

I enjoy my retirement online; I try to find some aspect of a question here to reply to with care and humor, but, I do not have any constraints or responsibilities to withhold what I know.

I get truly annoyed by flagrant marketing, or self promotion within any field by those here; this is for opinions, viewpoints, and free information IMHO, not so much .... well .... spamage~

And, the juvenile behavior, ugh; some seem so desperate, don't they see it too???

In many instances on Trulia as professionals code of ethics we cant comment on stat's for crime, ISD which city is better than the other, what should I place for an offer when realtor never seen a property, what should I sale my home for when a realtor does not have all the facts, there are many questions we cant answer matter of indicating the reasons why. If we were to commit we can be sued there was a suit filed recently based on a realtors answers that did not place disclaimers. I hope that assists in your answers. Some of these questions go unanswered therefore best to remind the public why we can't comment.
