Hi Emily, It really depends how often you use public tranportation. The subway and busses cost $2.00 a ride and you are allowed a free transfer from subway to bus or from bus to bus within three hours. If you are only using mass transit to go to and from work it would cost $20 per month $2.00 each way 5 days a week. The city offers special daily and weekly metro cards. Every $10 you put on a metro card you get 1 free ride. Taxis will cost more (an average taxi ride is about $8.00) the subways are really the best way around because you avoid the traffic.
