If you live in Valparaiso, where do you catch a train (and transfer) to get to downtown Chicago?
Realistically how long does it take?

All the other agents are correct. The Dunes Park Sation is the closest to Valparaiso. It will take 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to down town Chicago.

I worked in Chicago for 12 years and commuted on the South Shore from Valparaiso. You can either drive to Dune Park from Valparaiso which would take approximately 15-20 minutes depending on what side of Valparaiso you are coming from or drive to the Ogden Dunes station, which would take approximately 30 minutes. There is more parking at Dune Park. The train ride is approximately 1 hour. The city of Valparaiso will be unveiling their new bus station and bus service to Chicago later this year.

Hello,
You can catch the south shore train at Dunes Park. If you take the 49 bypass north, then take hwy 12 east. The train station is just to your left. The last stop is Randolph. There are several bus stations from there. I hope I helped. Fri May 23 2008, 17:36

You would drive to the South Shore station in Chesterton which is called the Dune Park Station. Depending on your location in Valparaiso this could take 15 minutes or more. The train to the city takes about 1:15 to the loop. For a detailed train schedule check out http://www.nictd.com
