Kevin Rayan, Real Estate Pro in Charlotte, NC

I am taking a survey here, want to see if people think it is better to live South of downtown or North of it for traffic reasons. Let me know.

You're probably a little better off going south, but neither way is a picnic. I'd suggest living close to where you normally travel. The roads in Charlotte aren't designed like most cities. Instead of being a checker board, it's more like a bicycle wheel, with spoke roads and rim roads. It's tricky trying to learn your way around, and getting around isn't very efficient either.

South of Uptown due to I-77 being the only major passage up towards Lake Norman and it changes from 4 lanes to 2, causing heavy congestion.

Good morning, Kevin:
Clients who are making a housing decision consider traffic as just one of many other factors. Traffic usually less important than proximity to employment, school rankings, how close they are to family and friends, shopping, recreation (Lake, Trails, Equestrian etc.), entertainment, etc. Unless there is an on-call requirement for work, traffic is rarely the deciding factor for most people. In a general sense, South Charlotte/Ballantyne, Lake Norman and North Union county areas seem to have fairly equal appeal. Also, NC-16 is opening up more options north of Charlotte. NCDOT maintains traffic count maps for the Charlotte region. . These have accurate actual traffic information that can also be compared on a year-by-year basis to determine change. If appreciate an answer, please give thumbs up. For the most helpful answer, please say thanks with a best answer click.

South of uptown without a doubt. You have manyu more options in terms of getting into uptown from the south than you do from the north. A backup on I77 can cause major delay s and theat will congest you... Where as in the South you can go around different avenues to get into uptown easier.
