Rte 23 transit center in Wayne, Nj is best. Trust me. I tried them all. It is about a 6-9 mile drive from Montville, depending on where you live. Buses run consistently and takes about 35-40 minutes to get into the Port Authority.

If you want to take the train from Montville to NY Penn Station, you will use the NJ Transit Towaco Station. The station is new and there is plenty of free parking. (unlike the surrounding towns) The train takes about 70 minutes from Towaco to NY Penn. You'll switch trains in Montclair or Newark. Once you get to Penn station, don't forget to add time to travel to your final destination in NYC. You can walk to Times Square in about 20 minutes from Penn Station. The Montville train only runs weekdays. So you cannot take the train into the city on weekends.

that is not true. trains from Montville go to Hoboken direct NOT NYC direct. You have to change trains at Montciair State or Newark to get the Morris/Essex line that then goes into NYC. Commute time all in is close to 1hr. 20 min (there are a lot of stops). you are better off driving to the Wayne Rt 23 transit center (NJ Transit) or depending on where in Montville you live, go to Rt. 46/Hook Mtn stop and take the Lakeland bus in. There are buslanes into the lincoln tunnel until 10am so the ride is in pretty good (on either bus, you are looking at about 45 min mayble longer w/ traffic)...its the ride home that can be bad if you leave in height of rush hour.

The commute is about 40 minutes on the train. You also have to take into consideration where you live in Montville and the commute to the train station. Some trains will go directly into New York Penn Station and others may require a transfer in Newark. We see you wrote this question in February.
