How easy it to get around Gowanus with public transportation (buses, trains, subways, etc)?

Is it possible to live in this city without a car?

Gowanus is a weird little spot, the only really convenient trains are in Carroll Gardens, the stops mentioned below are more for Boerum hill - Carroll Gardens. However the upside to this area is that the real estate is very unique; many of the homes were built in the turn of the century.

The R & M train lines stop at Union Street and the F, M, & R train lines stop at 4th Ave./9th Street.
