Chad,

You are spoiled by having the PATH (and ferries) to get you to NYC. Warren doesn't have a train station itself, but there are stations in Gilette and Stirling in Long Hill Township. These are on the NJ Transit Gladstone line, which takes you to the Hoboken station. I recommend to anyone who needs to commute to NYClooking to purchase in the NJ suburbs that they make use of the NJTransit.com website and it's itinerary planner. plug in the address of the property you are considering and your destination, and the website will tell you what public transportation is available. It's not perfect, and sometimes you have to tweak your input to get real answers (like it thinks my house is in Union County, when it is in Somerset County...) As far as driving it, always do a dry run, but be aware that it takes a long time if you try to drive it at peak rush times. I spent the last 14 years selling real estate in Hudson County and have lived out in Somerset County since 2000. Diving has been my only realistic option, but it STILL astounds me how long it can take. I stoppedscheduling appointments for before 10AM and I avoided leaving for home between 4 PM and 7 PM. A combo commuting option to consider is driving to Newark and parking near Newark Penn Station (I'm not sure what the proper name is for it...) It's important to have options. Contact me offlist to discuss further.

Hi Chad,
I used to take the Lakeland bus from Lyons (Basking Ridge) to Port Authority (1 hour) - much more relaxing than either the train or car. However, as my collegaues have mentioned I78 takes you due East to the Turnpike extension and it has just been completely resurfaced west of Summit. The train option provides Midtown Direct service each way from Lyons during rush hour which eliminates the need to change at Summit. However, the Summit interchange gives you the option of going to Penn Station (34th St) or Hoboken (Ferry or Path) to downtown NYC.
Hope this helps. Call me to discuss how I can be of service to you (908) 295-5129.

Chad,
Good answers from all of my colleagues. Look into taking advantage of Route 78 to Jersey City/Newark and taking the PATH in from there. It gives you some flexibility in your schedule, keeps you out of the tunnel and bridge traffic. This may not get you in the city any quicker but it will give you more trains into and out of the city. Also the towns north of Warren are more accessible to the train line and can offer you an easier commute while still providing outstanding schools and a high quality town. Call me to discuss your options and to help you find the best fit for you and your family.

Hi Chad, I have lived in Warren for 20 years, and my husband has commuted to the city for work. The one option I did not see mentioned by the other agents is the Lakeland Bus. There are several express buses that leave from Lyons Bus stop and with the use of the bus lanes the commute is approximately 50 min. If you use the Gillette stop at the Pathmark there is free parking and the commute takes about an hour. Pleasant ride, comfortable seats and cell phones banned. Please contact me to discuss other options.

Hi Chad, I did this commute for years and my husband still does - the main benefit of Warren is its access to 78 which provides a direct shot to the city. For years I worked in downtown and my husband across the river in Brooklyn and we actually drove in together. If you drive it, then you want to watch your timing so you don't hit heavy traffic head on going in or coming home.

There are buses in Basking Ridge and around Route 22. Train wise - you've got several lines you could tap -but when you combine driving time to train and ride on train, I think your estimate is pretty accurate. Because of our great access to 78, you can make it to Summit's train station in 20 minutes - though parking on a consistent basis could be problematic. But the train service from there will be plentiful.

Lynn is correct in saying that we've got loads of commuters here in Warren - I think you'll find that you will discover what works best for you and it may very well be some combination of the options - working late when trains run less frequently may have you go as far as Summit and drive from there. Light traffic days may have you drive it. But it can be done, and many, many people do it every day.

I live and work here in Warren - and would be happy to offer my guidance and expertise to your search.

Thank you. What is the transportation time to Bound Brook? It seems like all the trains are about 80-90 minutes, which seems very far, not including the drive to actually get the train. Are there any buses? And would that be faster?

Chad-
We have a ton of people commuting to and from the city - I'd say that a good portion of the working population commutes. You can catch a train from Boundbrook, Lyons (Basking Ridge), Stirling, Gilette, or catch the mid-town direct train from Summit. You can go to my website to find the schedule for NJ transit http://www.bestbuynjhomes.com/frame.shtml?http://www.njtransit.com for all times, etc.

If you are driving, you would take 78 E, where you can have access to GW bridge, Lincoln, and Holland Tunnels. You can also drive to Jersey City, and take the PATH from there.

So you have lots of options, and you get more for your money than if you were to purchase in Summit.

Let me know when you are planning a trip out to the area, and I'd be happy to take you on a tour!! dachisen@gmail.com
