Any reasonable person will tell you that sooner or later public transportation will be in Newton County. As people get smarter and more conservative they tend to drift closer and closer to public transportation. The plans for a Marta expansion project linking Atlanta with Conyers have been in the works for more than a decade. As the city expands into the suburbs and the area grows public transportation eventually becomes a neccesity. in most other areas around the country there is not such a grim outlook on public tansportation. In most northen states using Public Transport is a way of life. It cuts back on fuel costs and automobile repair and in some places theres no need to own a car at all which cuts out insurance and car payments. Due to Georgias changing demographic's many older generations have been scared away from the idea of public transportation which has contributed to a lack of use and development in our metro areas. Most dont link this to a decline in commerce but in actuality not using public transportation creates traffic problems, and also drives up road maintenance costs and pollution. The simple solution for all of this is educating the uninformed and older generations in Georgia about the advantages of Public transportation use and the mis conceptions of what happens when its use is expanded. Lets be blunt.. the only reason that people move into places where working class people once lived is because of one working class person moving out and the rest following. Dont be scared of change embrace it.

Let's hope not. Look at what public transportation has done to every area around Atlanta that has supported it. Duluth-no longer Duluth, Morrow-no longer Morrow, Sandy Spring-no longer Sandy Springs. When is enough enough? Let's hope Covington stays safe and with small town character. The small town atmosphere is why I moved back after college to raise a family and why my family had lived here for 9 generations. Hopefully Covington will continue to make a stand.

I hope not! God Forbid....Almost instantly after Public Transportation was introduced to Clayton County back in '02.(I think) Property Values began to tank and the riff-raff came sailing into what use to be a halfway decent town of working class people. Now Clayton Co. has one of the highest crime rates in Georgia. Not to mention how Public Transportation practically dessimated the quality of life in Cobb County! KEEP PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OUT OF NEWTON COUNTY!!!!!!!!!!!

I have lived in Newton County for 5 years. Unless MARTA plans to expand eastward, it does not appear to be likely. MARTA seems more interested in expanded north than anywhere else. When I worked in Atlanta, I relied on van pools run by the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority or the Express buses that leave from SIgman Road or Panola Road. There are also private companies that operate van pools from Newton County. Visit cleanaircampaign.com for more information on transportation options. I cannot attest to how accurate this list is but below is a link to GRTA's current van pools.
