how can I check the assessor records on a listing if it is not in Trulia?

Todd has the answer. Tax Records are available, on-line usually from the County Tax Appraisers Office or other such government recording agency. The names are often different than Tax Assesors office, sometimes they go by Appraisers Office or Records Office, etc...

Tax assessor records are public. Go to your county courthouse or website and usually all of the current tax records are there.
