One of the many benefits of Blogging is that every time you create a post, you actually create a new webpage with its own URL.
If the platform you use is playing nicely with Google (ActiveRain, Trulia...) then most of your posts can be indexed by Google and can be retrieved organically when home buyers/sellers use search engines like Google to find online content along with a "long tail keyword" (cheap homes for sale in Edison NJ). Now it means that when blogging, one needs to understand On Page Search Engine Optimization and key wording strategies...this is usually where we loose most agents...
There are other benefits that do not involve going deep in SEO but as mentioned Irena very nicely "Don’t expect instant gratification, if you do you will fail. Blogging is a long term commitment; you must commit to do it religiously."
I hope it helps-
I blog primarily here on Trulia and view it as another outlook to increase my presence and keep me on my toes.

I have transfered much of my blog entries to trulia and active rain, but today i am focusing on writing for Suite101.com because they hired me as a freelance writer which is one good thing that happened for me since I started blogging, and I do make a little bit of money for doing it now. My profile there is http://www.suite101.com/profile.cfm/jerrybarker
