In Bergen County, NJ, what is the exact definition of what is considered a "Bedroom"??

I am having trouble proving to Town Hall personnel that my house was, in fact, a three bedroom before an addition was put on in 1991. The bedroom in question is being used as my son's room, but it has two exits instead of one. It has a glass door leading to my family room and a glass door leading to the hallway with two other bedrooms. Before the addition, the room was just a room, with a closet, and a window looking outside to the back of the house. I am trying to put in a septic system to sustain my family of four and the town is trying to tell me that i am only allowed to put in a 2BR septic system because that's what they are considering I own now. The septic is original, though, when the house was officially made a three bedroom.

You do not necessarily need a closet in the room - this is coming from an appraisor that came to our office meeting and spoke on this specific subject...- as long as the room is a certain dimension ( not a tiny closet to put a bed in) you can count it as a bedroom, must have window and heat and a door ! If you are buying a home on Septic - and its a 3 bedroom home - then the Septic should be for 3 bdrms !

I always thought that a qualifications for a bedroom were:

- full sized window
- heat source
-closet

That's it.

Lisa,
Every town will have their own definition of what a bedroom actually is. Many towns will consider a room a bedroom if it has privacy, (a solid, not glass door) and an exit to the outside (window or door). Perhaps if you change the glass door to a solid door, that could help. You also might want to try and go through the old tax records in town hall and see if there is a record of it being assesed as a 3 bedroom house.
Good luck.
