As a Realtor who lives in Springfield, I can answer that question in a couple of different ways. I think (from what I hear) that the crime rate in Springfield is high, and it varies quite a lot between neighborhoods. I was nervous about that before I moved here in 2010, and so far my fears have been unfounded. My neighbors have been great, and very welcoming. I've never had a problem, knock on wood.
I was attracted to live here by the beautiful old Victorian that I ended up purchasing, at the edge of the park in the Forest Park neighborhood. The houses in my neighborhood are beautiful - similar to the McKnight neighborhood that you were asking about. I also know that people who live in McKnight tend to be very proud of their beautiful neighborhood.
I can't speak about the crime rate there. As the first person who answered here said, it's always best to contact the police department.
There's an active historic preservation group here in Springfield, as well as neighborhood civic associations.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have further questions about areas of Springfield, or specific properties. The historic properties are my favorite.
The people involved in the shooting at the barber shop in Pine Point were not from this area, I lived on Arnold ave for 18 years and I've never had any problems, the neighbors are great and recently they added 76 new home in my area.... more
Everyplace has it great and its crap sections.............. we as Realtors cannot tell you one is better place that another. At least not in writing on a major website........................... find a realtor you trust who knows the area well, no just say they do.... more
The best, in my opinion is the Glenwood section. It offers quite, safe living including the Atwater sction which is the choice by far. I used to own a home there. Now, the most important question.... Do you need schools? Springfield has a terrible school system. Chicopee, that is where I live now.West Spfld, and, Westfield have much better choices for schools and are safer, much more quiet cities within metro Spfld. Mass.
Springfield used to be called the City Of Homes. Still is. But, it has suffered from crime and inner corruption for so long that it is not the first choice of anyone who moves to this area. Hope this helps.... more
