I agree with the realtors who posted below - for being a small town, South Orange has quite a few neighborhoods, all with their own feel and identity. Neighborhood associations are very active in this town and you really have a great sense of community over all.
As for neighborhoods to be avoided, I would just say that it depends on your needs. If you want to be able to walk to town, you may not want to live in the Newstead area. Same goes for commuting, if you don't want to have to take a jitney or drive and park in town to take the train to NYC, there are a few neighborhoods closer to downtown I would have you focus on.
You really can't go wrong - South Orange and Maplewood have so much to offer. I live and work here as well and absolutely love it.
