I disagree with responses to some degree. I lived in Deal Island for 25 years and even had the opportunity to work on a commercial crabbing vessel. Deal Island is a unique, quiet out of the way piece of God's country. You must love your own company and that of your family. On the modern side, there is a Verizon tower and DSL. Those who can work from home or are looking to raise a family in a safe blue ribbon elementary school area can get it here. Small towns make for small classrooms, which makes for a great education. Everything by the way of nature is available and everything else is approximately 45 minutes due East, then North or South. There are no better sunsets in the country.

This is close enough to the water to enjoy the smells, sounds, and views without taking on the burden of an expensive yearly waterfront repair bill. Often, I have seen folks unfamiliar with Northeasters spend a great deal of money rebuilding their bulkheading each and every year.
At any rate, Deal Island is my piece of heave on earth. However, now I am a farmer's wife, and my home is on the market.... more
Harbour Light Condominium unit owners on the waterfront in Crisfield (Somerset County) successfully appealed their 2007 tax assessments in 2008 and 2009 and achieved a 33% reduction in assessed value, resulting in lower real estate taxes (less than $4,000 depending on assessed value). State of MD formally reassesses property values every three years in each county based on sales prices but property owners can petition for reassessment each year if they feel it is justified by lower sales values for comparable properties. See MD state website http://www.dat.state.md.us/ under Real Property tab to find assessed values of property. For Crisfield properties total tax is currently $1.712 per $100 of assessed value.... more
