San Rafael is the hub of Marin. Basically it offers more the amenities than any of the other cities here in Marin. Most of the car dealerships are here. Currently they have one of 2 Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in the county (2 very popular grocery stores). There is a Peet's, several Starbuck's and many other popular coffee shops. Sunday and Thursday morning is the largest Farmer's Market in Marin, located at the Civic Center and Thursday evenings downtown. There are many fine ethnic restaurants that people go to from all over Marin. The downtown area has been revamped over the years and the streets are bustling on weekend evenings. The Rafael Film Theater, which is owned and operated by the non-profit California Film Institute, is a beautifully restored art deco building in which they show 3 art and independent films many of which have won awards at the various film festivals throughout the world.

San Rafael has an abundance of places for grocery shopping, retail shopping, coffee, dining, etc. The grocery stores include Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, United Markets, Loch Lomond Market, Scotty's Market and Safeway. Retail stores vary from small boutiques to large chains, like Macy's and The Gap. There are many small coffee shops all over the city, as well as Starbucks and Pete's Coffee. The farmer's markets are held on 4th Street in downtown San Rafael and at the Marin Civic Center. San Rafael is also a city with an immense number of restaurants to choose from. Quality establishments that specialize in American, Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Mediterranean, Indian, etc. can be found throughout San Rafael.

Downtown has undergone a renovation over the years, and once again has that folksy small town feel. Being the largest city in Marin County, there are stores of every kind. The downtown has a wide range of restaurants as well, ranging from Italian to Thai, Japanese, Spanish and more. San Rafael also has two of the best grocery stores in the county, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, plus at least half dozen other excellent markets. It also host the Marin Farmer's Market two days and one evening per week.
