I found that if you have a child that does fit "in the box" that Tigard-Tualatin did not fit the bill. With that said, Tigard-Tualatin does indeed have an excellent special ed program. But if your child is somewhere in between, then consider somewhere else to live. Sherwood has great schools with tons of parental involvment. The schools are crowed, but the community is committed. Tigard-Tualatin has a lot of "latch-key" families and minimal community involvment.

"Best" is very subjective as it really depends on what sort of education you feel is best for your child/children. I have two boys, both with very different needs as one is a brainiac and the other very musically inclined. When moving to Portland from out of state, we decided that Beaverton would be the best match for our needs as the Beaverton district has many option schools that specialize in the arts, communication arts, sciences, technology and I believe this year they are introducing a health sciences school. Even with in the normal district high schools there are options for a traditonal diploma or an international bacclaureate diploma, as well as many honor classes. We have been in Beaverton for 5 years now and have been exceptionally satisfied with the education that our kids have received. Our hometown in Ca had disbanded all music programs, and here my two boys have absolutely flourished in the music programs that start in elementary school and are available all the way through high school. Please feel free to contact me for particulars, and best of luck!

My web site has the information on schools anywhere in the greater Portland area. Some times looking at one school is different than the whole district because you have a specific issue. Schools have different programs and if you live in Portland you can go to just about any other Portland school you want with no transfer issue.

Hi Sally-
Here's a link to the Portland Monthly article Our Best Schools 2007: Progress Report:
And here's the Portland Public Schools website: You'll get info there on test scores for each of the schools. Also info on special programs at the schools.
Transfer from one school to another in Portland is not always simple, easy, or guaranteed. Just ask the out-of-area parents who want their children in the Mandarin Immersion Program at Woodstock school. Or the parents who want their children to attend Hollyrood Elementary. Many elementary and middle schools are by lottery, some with odds approaching the Oregon Lottery! Here's a link to info on transfering in the Portland Public School system:
Short answer: take people's opinions of "best" schools with a grain of salt and do your research on individual schools. There are "best" schools in "worst" districts and vice-versa.
I've got a few links with info on private schools and home schooling on my schools page:…
