You can check police activity on most major metro area city's website.
But just like the others have said, the most sensible approach is to take some time to be in the neighborhood yourself and talk to others you identify with who know it. Everyone has their own sense of 'safety' and no one else (especially your real estate agent) can tell you what that is.
The Internet is great for finding 'houses', but the only real way to know it's your 'home' is to see it.
Find an agent you like and trust and take some time to make the best decision for you.
