Yes, I think you'll find the scores for those schools to be very strong compared to other county schools! Here is the link to all county school test score info:

http://hcpss.org/academics/testscores.shtml

Also, I currently have a home for sale in this area. It is a great buy in excellent condition on over 1 acre. Info can be found at:

Dear Home Hunting,

Marriotts Ridge is a newer school so that is probably why they don't have the scores out yet. The students who are districted for it came from Centennial, Mt Hebron and Glenelg. So, the scores should come in very strong.

why I couldn;t find the ranking for Marriotts Ridge high school? Is it a good HS? I saw Lenn Harley's answer in 2007, but what's the source of her ranking?

Defining "best" to one person will be different for another. If you ask, who has the highest SAT scores, that answer can easily be answered. But it doesn't mean it is the best school. Typically Centennial High School has the highest SAT score.

Scores can be found at http://www.hcpss.org/.

By the way, there is info on each school. Click on school, then elementary, middle or high school. Then the .pdf for each school.

Howard County schools rank in the top 10 to 20 in the United States, so it's hard to go wrong. My daughters graduated in 2003 and 2006 from a high school in the middle of the pack, and received academic recruitment from all sorts of top colleges and universities. And candidly, I was less happy with the very highly-ranked elementary school where they started than I was the lower-ranked one where my younger daughter was redistricted. We've had students at the lowest-ranked high school of its day accepted into the math honors program at University of Chicago, and students from the highest ranked one flunk out of the remedial courses at the community college!

Check the statistics, yes, but schedule some visits at some of the schools. And, if you know co-workers who lives here and has children in the schools, chat with them. And, as a parent, I can tell you that your involvement in your children's school activities makes a big difference in their success!

Jeff,

For testing data go to http://www.hcpss.org and click on "test scores". This is Howard County's Public School website. Certainly there are other factors besides scores. You can call the Board of Ed at 410.313.6600. As a Realtor in Howard County, I can tell you home prices change in relation to the reputations of schools. I graduated from Howard High School in 1995. Howard usually ranks the lowest from a scores stand point, but it was a great school.

Jeff, As I was a teacher in Howard County Schools for more than 10 years, HCPSS runs as an entire County. You need to determine your housing needs and then use a pro-con list to determine most suitable schooling needs. There are a variety of school system searches you could do to check on scores.....

Hi Jeff,
I went to school in Howard County from 3rd-12th grade and was then accepted into Stanford. I attended Clemens Crossing Elementary, Wilde Lake Middle, and Atholton High, which are all Howard County public schools. As a whole, Howard County schools are excellent, and just as importantly, are regarded as excellent by colleges. But I may be able to help more if you have a more specific question?

Hi Jeff. What is "the best" school district in Howard County" is not possible to answer. The schools have varying ranking for different specialities, high tech, college prep, etc. A visit to the Howard County BOE will give you access to the school test results for different school clusters. You'll have the information to make a judgement.
Howard County has valuable information published and available.

Hi Jeff - I'm not from Maryland but have you checked out greatschools.net -- this site collects consumer ratings and reviews of schools. I've heard great things about it. See the link below -- if you open the page you'll see the list of schools on the site. click a school and you'll see its rating/reviews.
