We made the move to Sarasota from out of state with a child with special needs. Unfortunately, our experience has been less than positive with Sarasota County School District as a whole. We opted for a charter school that has met most of our needs as they were willing to at least work with the situation and have been flexible. The traditional public school options did not happen to work for our particular situation. There is not an inclusion model in the county and this was something important to us. There are private alternatives as well if you have McKay. Your assigned home school will be based on your address, but for charter and private schools then address will not matter as long as you are in the county. There are also school choice options. Connecting with some of the local parents through some of the agencies/groups here may help you get the inside scoop on each school and how they address special needs and deal with parents.

As a side note I thought you might enjoy the article below as well. (The Sarasota district was recently ranked 4th in the state out of 67 districts for student achievement)
Contact the Exceptional Student Education Supervisor to find out what school your child would be placed in and then go from there for locations to live. Your child would be bussed. My grandson has autism and goes to Sarasota County Schools. They have a small bus that picks him up and drops him off at his home. He is currenlty in middle school and is waiting to find out where he will go next year for high school. He won't necessarily go to the school within his designated area. So you need to talk to someone in the ESE Department.

The schools here in Sarasota County are wonderful. You may want to look at greatschools.net for school ratings and city-data.com for additional information on the area. I have previous customer and friend who chose Venice Elementary for their special needs programs but there are many schools in the district that offer programs. Here is a link for the school district so you can call and ask about the different programs. http://sarasotacountyschools.net. From there, you can check greatschools.net to get detailed information on the different schools. We can narrow a home search down to suit your desired school. I hope this helps, feel free to contact me anytime.
you can search the website below for schools in the area that might work for your child's unique needs. Once you decide on the school you can concentrate on homes in the district that suits you.
