As pointed out earlier, Stevenson Elementary school is modeled along a parent participation school. There are extensive requirements for parent participation. As an example, every child's parent has to commit to teaching for 2 hours in the classroom / week alongside the teacher assisting her/him in daily lessons. Parents are expected to hold classroom jobs which vary and require a commitment of around 4 hours or so /month. Parents are also required to serve on a school wide committee serving for around 20 hours/ year.
The school emphasizes hands on learning, tends a garden patch, actively organizes field trips (which parents drive children on). This is not a school for everyone and everyone is not for this kind of a school. The benefits of this model are numerous as well both to the child and the parent.
The neighborhood has a lot of families which attend Stevenson, and home prices have risen quite a bit this year. Some of the homes have undergone modernization while there are some homes still with the original layout in place. It is close to shoreline park, a short bike ride to downtown / caltrain/VTA and happens to be one of the last affordable neighborhoods in the M. View area where home prices aren't breaching a million or more.
Some of the Mountain View school programs have received concerns that they are too regimented. This is a concern not unique to Mountain View schools. I would recommend visiting the MountainView Voice and searching for schools to learn a little about what has happened. http://www.mv-voice.com/
Mountain View was one of the first cities to show increasing home prices this year. Generally areas which have a wide favorable reputation are among the first to show rising home sales prices and among the last to show falling home prices. There is a website http://www.greatschools.org/ that can give you the rating for the school and sometimes has parent comments. You should also maybe consider talking to a parent who has their child enrolled in that school. First hand info is always best. If you are not working with a realtor already in San Jose I can refer you to a great one.
Please drop me a line if you are interested in getting the agents information.
Other than that it is a great neighborhood, close to downtown, and with Google and Apple expanding so much the future of Mountain View looks excellent.
