We were in the same situation several years ago. I did a lot of research online. We moved to an area zoned for Ashton Elementary and Sarasota Middle. The schools are practically right across the street from each other and both schools have excellent gifted programs for the above average grade child, as well as, children on grade level. After living here several years and talking with other parents...we made the right decision for our children and they have excelled! Good luck!

The easiest way to check out all the schools in Sarasota or Manatee County is to visit my web site. I have links there to all the school sites to help guide you in your decision. While you are there feel free to look through the site and if you would like to search the MLS system through my automated program you can register to receive email updates on the properties which meet your criteria.

Here is the school pages link:…

Let me know if I can be of further help. My wife and I have children in elementary and middle school. As a result, I fairly knowledgeable about the school system and how to navigate it.

The schools are only closed in July. If you are here anytime prior to that you can tour. There is no easy answer to your question because it depends on your child. However, at the elementary school level you almost can't make any mistakes. Teachers are younger and more up to speed on recent trends in education practices. They collaborate more between themselves to develop seamless curricula. There are also some excellent charter schools for elementary age kids located throughout the community so pick the house you like and the school ought to be just fine!!

Thoughtful Mom...

Sarasota County has a school to fit any need your child/children might require. There are schools for the arts and sciences, prep schools, International studies school, and we even have the sailor circus school. The list is extensive and our public and charter schools are some of the best in the state. It depends on what you desire. I agree with some of the others..Southside, Ashton, Laurel/Nokomis, Tatum Ridge are a few. Pineview requires testing and has a date that the testing has to be done by in order to qualify for admission that school year. Riverview is an International studies school and Out-of-Door Academy is an open( individualized program) school...Image Schools are prep schools. There is quite an extensive list. I hope I answered a few of your questions. If you would like to find out more..please feel free to contact me. I will be delighted to help anyway possible!

Kind regards,

Try the link above. You'll find ratings for all schools here and you will be able to choose a link just for elementary schools. One favorite amoung parents is Southside School for a public elementary school or Pineview a public school for the gifted (child needs to test in) but it is a public school. For private schools look at The Out of Door Academy.

Most schools in Sarasota County are new or newer facilities, and the county recently ranked in the top 5 among Florida counties.

Parents and kids rave about Ashton Elementary. It's in the Palmer Ranch area.

Great question! Sarasota offers many choices for elementary schools. A great one to look into is Pine View Elementary located in Osprey just a little south of Sarasota but has bus routes reaching most areas of Sarasota . If you have a certain area you are considering, let me know and I would be happy to refer you to the top schools.

As a Dad, Grandfathr and former trustee of a private school with teachers in my family I admire yiour priorities and concern. Overall Public Schools are excellent in Sarasota. I am a big advocate of the Southgate area for school. There are a number of private and charter scool options as well. Feel free to send me any questions about the schools in the area at

Go to the school web sites, contact the parent teacher organizations and speak to someone, research information about the schools that might best fit your needs.
