Late elementary school registration time

Asked by Emily, Tunica, MS Mon Jan 27, 2014

Our family is moving to bay area and is looking at homes in Palo Alto area. We noticed that the school early registration has started. So we are under the pressure of purchasing a house. In case we can not make a decision before summer, would we still be able to register my son in a public school at Palo Alto? when would be the latest time we need to settle down on a Palo alto home for school registration purpose?

You need to call the school district and talk to them about the admission process. Regardless of your move-in time the school district will have to accommodate your son.

Emily, as long as you are a Palo Alto resident your children will be places in a Palo Alto school no matter when they register. The question is which Palo Alto school. If you are not a resident during the initial registration period then you may not know which school that will be until right before school starts in August. You can even move here in the middle of the school year and the district will find a place for you, but it may not be your neighborhood school. The only exception to that is the small section of Palo Alto on the Los Altos border which feeds into the Los Alto school district, and 1/2 of a townhome complex on San Antonio Rd which feeds into the Mountain View district. (Don't ask, it makes no sense) All homes in the Palo Alto school district are within 1 mile of an elementary school to encourage children to walk or bike to school. However, if the neighborhood school fills up then the child is placed in another Palo Alto school which could be as far as 2 miles away.
If you have not found a home by the time school starts in Aug you can rent an apartment and as long as it is in the PA district boundaries you can register your children in one of the schools.

I think you will love living in Palo Alto! For some info on things to do here check out my blog

Emily, I'd be happy to speak with you as a local Realtor about the buying conditions for a specific price point and location in Palo Alto based on school zones. It is very difficult to negotiate and win a deal in the current market; Price alone is not enough to ensure your purchase offer will be accepted by the seller. As for school registration try calling the Palo Alto Unified School District to get your questions answered.

Don't worry about registering late because of when you move. The PAUSD will admit your children to a school if you can prove you are residents. Your children may not attend the nearest elementary. Some of the schools are more crowded than others. Fortunately all of them are excellent. Links to Palo Alto schools http://julianalee.com/palo-alto/palo-alto-schools.htm ...

Emily, I just registered one of our sons at Addison Elem and we really like the neighborhood. Finding a house in Palo Alto, for the right price, within a short time frame, may be difficult. The market is very hot, and about 50% of the listings go with all cash and about 10% over asking. It is a very crazy market and inventory is extremely low. There are about ten active listings in PA. Although I would love to help you with the buying your new house, if I were you, I would identify the right school/pocket within the city first, and I would rent in that pocket while shopping for the right house. Please let me know if you have questions re specific schools and neighborhoods within PA. I am a Palo Alto resident and I could be a good resource. I can be reached at 650-847-7222.
