Island Village Montessori school or Laurel Nokomis? Want to live in Venice but would be restricted to where we could live with Laurel Nokomis.

Asked by Sue Holmes, Englewood, FL Sun Oct 20, 2013

We are relocating soon with our daughters who are 6 and 10. What is the Island Village Montessori school like? We are looking at both the Laural Nokomis school and the Island Village school but ideally would like to live in Venice. We will be renting first but would be restricted with where we can live if the girls go to Laurel Nokomis, isn't that right? Would appreciate advice from those who have had kids at Island Village or Laurel Nokomis, or anyone else with first hand experience.

It is true that you would be limiting yourself where to live if you want your children at Laurel Nokomis. Every school has a district. Garden Elementary is a lovely school, across the street from the YMCA. The Sky Academy is in the Y campus and it is a middle school. Venice Elementary has a brand new campus near downtown Venice.

There are many public schools in Venice. Why are you limiting yourself to Laurel Nokomis? I know it is convenient because they have the elementary and middle school in the same campus, so your girls could attend together. The Montessori school is a charter school I think up to eighth grade. Not sure. Montessori is a totally different philosophy. Personally, I would not recommend this school.

Go to the schools web sites and read about them. Talk to the parent organization and principals of both schools.

Laurel Nokomis is in the Sarasota County School District

Hi Sue:

I can't answer with first hand experience about kids in school, but you may find a couple of pages on my website helpful in determining where to live:

The Island of Venice is perfect as far as a place to live because you have excellent beaches within walking distance, as well as the benefits of downtown Venice.
