The division between rich and poor has widened considerably over the past few years. That reality is even starting to make the newspapers. When you find a neighborhood with low housing prices, you can bet that there will be more poor people living there than in wealthy neighborhoods with high prices.

So the numerous questions on Trulia that ask " Is 'South Succotash' a 'good' neighborhood" are subtle acknowledgments from people who feel they should be in the middle class, living in a middle class neighborhood, enjoying the middle class lifestyle, yet find that their housing budget lumps them in with the new majority - the poor.

Furthering the irony is that the neighborhoods that are worriedly asked about were middle class neighborhoods a decade or two or three ago. As the prosperity of the nation is concentrated among fewer families, more neighborhoods in more cities descend from being middle class to being - ah, well, - for lack of a better euphinism: affordable.

Alan,
Golf Course is an older, well established neighborhood that offers close access to freeways, nice sized homes for the sale price and is close to several area schools.

Is it a good place to raise a family? That is each individual buyers decision. No agent can appropriately tell you whether the neighborhood is right for you. Check school reports- http://-www.scusd.edu, check crime reports- http://-www.sacpd.org/crime/mapping and drive the neighborhood during the day, weekends, nights, and get a feel for the place.

Hire a Realtor to drive you around and show you homes. There are areas all over various Sacramento locations suffering blight, there are areas that still show pride of ownership. My former clients in Golf Course Terrace and adjacent neighborhoods, always seemed happy with the neighborhood--said it was peaceful and neighbors were friendly.

Foreclosure opportunities there could bring more homes that need work than move in ready, but will bring you nice sized, charming homes at prices with payments less than rent!!

Good luck!! Great time to buy!

It is what I would consider a spotty neighborhood. I would recommend driving the neighborhood.

It is located in the Sac Unified school district, something to consider.

How much are you looking at spending? Depending on your price might offer more possibilities. I price foreclosed homes for banks on a daily basis and have a good idea about area values.
