I am a mother of two children, I grew up in a lot different places and countries, every one is different and we all look for different things. Scottsdale unifed School District all elementaries , middle schools and high schools are excellent schools, Paradise Valley also have great schools ( I live in Scottsdale and our home School is Kiva). Check for schools boundaries once you choose a school. I could share more experience if you have more questions, feel free to contact me. Welcome to Scottsdale, you are going to love it. Be prepared for some really sunny days.
We moved our family from Phoenix to Scottsdale, for one primary reason: the schools. My wife has a Doctorate in Education, and so you can understand schools are a very important priority for us.
My wife now owns a tutoring company called Oxford Learning in North Scottsdale. We have partnered with Scottsdale school district for a number of programs. If you want some straight scoop about Scottsdale Schools, which specific schools are better/worse, for various reasons (some don't test as well, some have great PTA's, some have great administration, etc.), if you chat with Jan Belt or Erin Moore (our center director), I'm sure you'll be able to get all of the information you are looking for.
I have a son who's attended six of the Scottsdale schools and would gladly share our experiences with you off-line. Also, I serve on the board of directors for the special education group above (my son is diagnosed with autism) and on the citizen's committee providing oversight to the last year's bond election which will fund much technology over the next seven years.
Here are a few parent organizations which you can use to you get first hand contact with parents in Scottsdale many schools.
Scottsdale Parent Council - http://scottsdaleparentcouncil.org/
Scottsdale Supporters of the Gifted - http://azgifted.org/?q=node/818
Special Education Parents Advisory Council - http://sepacs.org/
If you go to the Scottsdale school web site at http://www.susd.org, scroll down to the bottom, and you will see the Schools link. When you click on that, the list of schools will come up with their web sites. Most will have links to the PTA organization for the particular school, which will often give you more parent contact information.
IMPORTANT: You need to know that the city of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Unified School district boundaries are different. Buying a home with a Scottsdale address does not guarantee that you will be in the Scottsdale school district.
Call or email if you'd like to discuss more.
