Can I petition my child to go to Piedmont school with a Oakland city zip code?

Asked by Bunnyin, Oakland, CA Thu Jul 19, 2007

My husband and I fell in love with this condo near Piedmont area with all the top school, nice neighborhood, but the address of the condo is Oakland with Oakland zip code. The realtor told me even though the condo is 3 blocks from Piedmont elementary school with API score 900 but I still need to drive 1.5 miles to another elementary school in Oakland with API score 666. What can I do?

You may apply for an interdistrict transfer with the Oakland Unified School District, but a closer proximity to a different school district is usually not a reason that they'll grant a transfer. Transfers are generally permitted due to employment, childcare, or continuing in the same school even though the student does not live in that school’s city. If you wish to try and exit the OUSD for the Piedmont school district you should bring documentation supporting your request to the Student Assignment Office.

Also, If you don't feel that your neighborhood school is right for you, you may apply to other elementary schools with in Oakland through the OUSD open enrollment program. Oakland has some excellent elementary schools with scores comparable to Piedmont. (look at the website, http://www.greatschools.net)

Good Luck!

Piedmont is a city, not a district of Oakland, with its own school district, mayor, police and fire departments, etc. Only Piedmont residents (owners or tenants) are eligible to attend the Piedmont schools. There are, however, many high-scoring elementary schools in Oakland. Please call me at (510) 604-5728 so I can help you find a property that suits your needs.

Unfortunately getting into the Piedmont school systems without having a Piedmont address is next to impossible. When searching for a property on Oakland, make sure to look at the school district outlines, which are available on the OUSD website along API scoring data.

Oakland Schools are a difficult situation to handle while living in such a great area. I am the resullt of a Public to Private Oakland School switch. I attended Elementary and Jr. High School in Oakland but once I was to enter High School it was time for the switch. There are many amzing private schools in Oakland. i attended Holy Names and loved it. The problem is many parents when having multiple children in the school it can be very costly. Piedmont does have exceptional schools. If you would like to look up Oakland Schools stats you may go to there site at http://www.Oaklandnet.com and go to this link http://webportal.ousd.k12.ca.us/Default.aspx

Best of Luck!

Piedmont and Oakland are different Districts and municipalities. I would be almost imposible to do this. I went to school in Oakland and it has many excellent private schools for elementary and high school. You can also check out the website for great schools at http://greatschools.net. I hope this helps.

I lived in the area (on the Oakland side) for years. Piedmont is a completely different municipality, with separate city services from Oakland; for that reason, the school district is separate. I imagine that (I don't know if this is possible in California) you could pay the out-of-town tuition fee for your child to have him/her attend a Piedmont school.
