Are students allocated a public school based on the neighborhood they live in?

Asked by vorsterphoto, Mount Pleasant, SC Fri Dec 27, 2013

We are from Ontario, Canada and are considering a move south. A good school is very important to us (children in Grade 5 & 6). It seems that Mt Pleasant would be a good bet for us as far as location goes. Are there any schools (public/private) in that area that are particularly renowned or sought after? If a school is allocated based on the neighborhood we reside in we may need to pick a school before we pick a house :) Many thanks for your input/time.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to provide you with some info about schools in the Charleston SC area!

You have received some excellent responses to your question but I also wanted you to know the Charleston SC also has some Magnet School system that will sometimes allow children to cross zone lines to attend these schools. Some of them have specific disciplines or requirements such as Art and Music. Let me know if you would like additional information about any of them.

Best regards,

Yes, vosterphoto, shool catchment areas are assigned according to geographic location, most of the time by neighborhood. When my wife and I moved here from Vancouver, BC ten years ago, we had 12 and 8 year old boys, and, as you are now, determined that we needed to pick the schools first, and then the home - we also bought in Mount Pleasant. Please bear in mind that schools are sometimes re-districted based on demand and capacity, and this process is currently happening in some Mt Pleasant schools.
I'd be glad to discuss any additional information with you, and to help you if you need a Realtor. You can call me on my cell phone at 843-864-3777. My website http://www.BuyHomesInCharleston.com also may have some information of interest about the area.

Hi Alan, thanks for your response. Your perspective will be a great help since you've relocated from Canada as well. Would you mind sharing your opinions on the schools in the area. It would help us to be able to narrow down the top few schools so as to better decide upon the neighborhood/catchment area to be looking in. Also, your experience as a young family starting over in Mount Pleasant, what it an easy transition (fitting in)? How does the neighborhood cater to families who are busy with sports etc? Can you give us the top few area's of Mount Pleasant that in your opinion are the better investment? Many thanks for your assistance Alan. I will check out your site now! Regards,

Excellent question!!! Down south the school is allocated based on the neighborhood. So it would serve you well to pick the school first or go private. If you need help with this or need a website that could help you with school rankings here in SC just contact us and we would be glad to share it with you. Both me and my wife are full-time Realtors in the area and so you would have 2 Realtors instead of one representing you and helping you find the perfect home for you and your family. We have lived here for close to 27 yrs.in Mt. Pleasant, James Island, Summerville, West Ashley and are very familiar with various communities that may fit your needs. Our office is located on Daniel Island, SC which might also be a nice option for you that has a private school. And as you may already know there is never a fee to use our services our fees are always paid by the seller so don't hesitate to call or email with any questions you might have. We wish you well on your home search and hope you have a smooth transition to the area it has been ranked no.#1 worldwide by travel magazines as far as most popular tourist locations, we would be happy to show you around!

The public schools in the Mt. Pleasant overall have great ratings. You can view all public school ratings/demographics/teacher:student ratios at the http://www.ccsdschools.com website. And to answer your question, yes, kids are allocated to school based on their residence. Those school boundary lines can be viewed on the same website. Wendy Green, Southern Living Real Estate.
