It depends on the state you live in. In New Jersey, when a property is being sold in a short sale, the lease must be honored by the new owner. You can not be forced out. The new owner must allow you stay to the end of the lease. If the new owners are going to live in the property themselves after that you will have to move. If you have paid your rent on time,and they are going to use it as a rental property they must renew your lease if you want to stay. Check your state 's website for renter 's rights in your state.

No it is not illegal. You have to pay the rent as agreed, but in California, you may be able to sue the landlord and recover some of the rent in certain situations. Research "rent skimming"... more
