who pays for the solid resources fee?

Asked by Laleesee, Los Angeles, CA Sun Nov 7, 2010

I rent a unit in a duplex and have paid for the solid resources fee that is part of the power bill...I agreed to pay for the electricity but not the solid resources fee.

All fees to be paid by whom should have been written out in your lease. If it is not, then you should do so now so there is no misunderstanding of who is responsible for what. Everything is negotiable, and it is never too late to address an issue as it arises.

All utilities are negotiable, so check your lease, and if it says you don't have to pay it, you don't have to pay it.

Its called solid resources fee or solid waste fee. Residents are charged a Solid Waste Fee to cover the cost of landfilling and recycling residential waste. This fee is used exclusively for solid waste and recycling services and cannot be used for any other purpose. Other taxes paid to the City do NOT support any of Solid Waste services. The bill comes monthly for land lord with his water bill and usually they pay for it . You did a good job negotiating to not pay for this.

If trash is billed separately per unit and is on the DWP bill then most often the renter pays. Since the landlord doesn't receive a separate bill it would be too unwieldy to wait for you to send them copies every month and then issue you a separate check.
