When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Some areas close to UCLA that you might want to consider are: Westwood, Brentwood, Mar Vista, Palms, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Santa Monica.

The areas around UCLA are mostly pretty safe, however, you always have to be on your guard and make sure you take precautions for your personal safety and your property safety, to avoid being a victim of a crime. Always know your surroundings. Walk in well lit areas. It is best to walk with a buddy. Pay attention to your surroundings and don't talk on the phone while walking. Make sure you lock your doors and windows. Make sure you put any items out of sight in your vehicles. Hide it, Lock it, Keep it! That is the LAPD's motto.

You can always check with the Senior Lead Officer in the area of where you want to live or call the local police station, which for the UCLA area is the West LA Community Police Station. UCLA also has a Campus Police http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/police who may also give you more information.

Most of the surrounding areas of UCLA are pretty nice...but you do need to check them out for yourself and make sure you feel comfortable in that area.
