In an increasing age of fraud and scams, the FBI has posted a guideline on Real Estate and rental scams. The FTC, state real estate agencies and the IRS also have guidelines on common real estate scams.

Here are some good links:

Kim, its great you are able to spot them, unfortunately some people may be driven to real estate rental and sale scams. A buyer or renter should always consult a real estate professional with verifiable credentials and reputation. Did I say VERIFIABLE?

We are working on fighting fraud everyday here at Trulia. The best thing a consumer can do is flag the listing so we can block the user from Trulia and take other actions. Fraud is horrible experience for anyone, when you are online NEVER send money to anyone via paypal, or pay "fees" to get access to Keys, etc.

We are continuously monitoring the latest scams and tactics used by fraudsters. We take these matters seriously. If you come across a scam, please email fraud@trulia.com so that we can remove it.

Dear Kim:

If something is too good to be true, or hard to believe, it is probably is a scam of some sort. As a consumer you must always be alert and careful. Here is an article I wrote about Internet scams in real estate and some tips regarding how to prevent being scammed:

My suggestion is to find yourself a reputable Realtor, and work with them to help guide you through the transaction
