Trying to stand out in an open house

Asked by Trulia San Francisco, San Francisco, CA Fri Oct 26, 2012

We're trying to find an apartment to rent in SF (1-2br in the Mission or Noe Valley) and it's difficult. Competition is intense (20 candidates showing up to see a open houses). What kind of things can we do to stand out from the crowd during the entire process?

Hi there,

I think the best option is to bring a certified cheque to show your good standing with the banks. Cash is very crude and you have no record that you actually gave that cash to the potential landlord.

Bring references ahead of time before the open house.
Also, ensure that you dress appropriately. First appearances do count!

Bring cash or your check book and be ready to move the instant you like something. When it's this competitive you simply have to be ready to make a move at a moments notice.

I would also fill out applications in advance when possible and take a credit report with that day's date on it.

Good luck!
