Question about having a dog as emotional support animal in non-pet-friendly rentals.

Asked by Jane D., Thu Oct 3, 2013

Dog-friendly units are far and few between on the West Side. I know I can legally have my emotional support service dog, but I'm scared that if I disclose that from the get-go to a manager that runs a pet-free building, then I won't even be considered, and there will be no proof that it was discrimination.

Does anyone have any experience or advice about how to rent a normal apartment and be considered? Should I not disclose my dog until after I have been approved? I feel like managers/owners frown so much on dogs in general. Everything that IS dog-friendly, I don't particularly care for... and everything that isn't seems so unattainable.

Thanks!
