Looking to rent condo. How do i research landlord to make sure they actually own the property. Also, can I find out if property is in forclosure?

The best way to find out that information is to go to the county governments website. It depends county to county but they should have a link to a Real Estate Assessment Search or something related to that which is put out by the county Assessors office. For smaller counties it may be the commissioner of revenue. Search for the property in question in order to find out who owns it, which is public record. Search for the landlords name to see all of the properties he/she owns.

For searching if the property is in the foreclosure process, search for your countys clerk of the circuit court website(probably will be linked to from the county site). Find a link to search the records online, many have a link to "mortgage foreclosures", if not, then search by the name of the owner and see if any cases have been filed against him/her.

For Hillsborough county where you are, the websites to search for properties is: http://www.hcpafl.org/CamaDisplay.aspx

For the county clerk it is: http://www.hillsclerk.com/publicweb/home.aspx
For foreclosures cases it is: ftp://www.hillsclerk.com/civil/foreclosure_list/.

Hope that helps!
