Avoid Chicago rental services a/k/a apartment locators a/k/a apartment finders at all costs. Too many of them will bait-and-switch you and cause you problems.

Identify the area you're interested in, then walk / drive around looking for FOR RENT signs. Walk into a reputable brokerage firm in the area and ask to speak to an agent. Look for landlords / management companies who have multiple properties in your target area - you'll see their signs on buildings.

Work with a Realtor
Be prepared to provide your credit and income information
Be prepared to provide 1-2 months security deposit

As per suggestions - it all depends on where you want to live, what your time frame is, and what your budget is.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I would get a good leasing agent to help out. Its free to use their services. Find one that works in your area. If you dont want to use an agent, you can always try craigslist.
